This is the classroom starting to actually look like a classroom! I caught one of the awesome Starbase staff setting up. I don’t think she is pleased about the photo. :P

This part of the wall is where the blueprint of the golden gate bridge is actually becoming the Golden Gate bridge. I chose to paint it back lit so there would be a dark silhouette to contrast the white paint of the blueprint side.

Also, this painter’s tape that I have been using is awful for the soft-body acrylics. It’s been ripping little chunks of paint off the wall. Needless to say, not going to use it the way I have been.

Painting on the opposite end of the wall now, I am creating the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour launching off into space. In the exhaust I have added in equations relating to Newton’s Second Law of Motion emphasizing F=MA. Enjoy!

This is the start of the second wall. I didn’t realize how annoying (time consuming) text is to do. Oh well, I think it turned out alright.

Wall Complete!!!! Okay not completely complete, but close. I still need to install the earth behind that plexiglass panel. However, I have recently found out that the panel is anchored into the wall… So, I’ll need to figure out some solution to paint behind there.

A lot of these photos are of the really big, zoomed-in H2O molecule. I think it turned out rather well, and I believe that it is actual correct, at least in its number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Yay Science!

Lot’s of work done today! Painted in the space shuttle and got all of the water molecules knocked out!

I feel like I need to start explaining why there is a space ship crashing into the ocean and a big blank piece of wall underneath the spaceship. There is a reason I promise you.

The kiddos do a really funny sounding project in class that involves an egg inside a  tiny space shuttle. He is strapped in by the kids using materials they are given (tape, rubber bands, etc) and then viciously launched at the wall (underneath my painted shuttle (Don’t worry there’s pleiglass)). If the kids are successful, their egg survives the crash. If they fail, “Eggbert” is no more, but has provided a lot of entertainment. My painted shuttle is supposed to represent Eggbert’s crashing down into the ocean. In that blank piece of wall I will paint Earth.

Woo, sorry for the long post! :D

Adding details and highlights to all the bubbles today. This surprisingly took a lot longer than I had expected. Going to start painting some space shuttle awesomeness soon.

Oh and it is very unfortunate where that thermostat is on the wall. Note to self when making future murals: Design around wall objects…

I actually asked them if I could just paint the thermostat blue. I did not get the answer I hoped for. -_-

It’s movin’ along. That bubble is huge. It looked so tiny on my computer screen. Mostly all of the solid colors have been put down and I’ve even started painting with values! and other fun art terms! Look at those splashy waves!

And so it begins! This is actually on the second day of painting. Spent the first doing mostly outlines.  You can see my lovely assistant (wonderful girlfriend person) in some of the photos helping me get started on this beast of a wall. I’ll need to look up my measurements again but I believe this wall was close to 40 feet long. :O

I started up a project at Camp Mabry in Austin, Tx for the Texas Starbase - DoD Starbase about a month ago and wanted to start sharing the pictures. The DoD Starbase is an awesome non-profit organization that is focused on getting kiddos (5th graders) into hands on projects that involve Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. You can find out more about them here http://www.dodstarbase.org/.
Anyways, this is my design for the first wall to be painted in classroom 1. I’ll post progress pics daily if I can. :)
